In collaboration with the World Tourism Organization (WTO), the Tunisian government has initiated its eVisa project that will come into effect in the coming months. The new process is seen as a facilitation measure. It will reduce waiting times and make it faster and easier to obtain a visa to Tunisia for Portuguese citizens.
Do Portuguese Citizens Need a Visa for Tunisia?
Entry to Tunisia is currently visa-free for short stays for Portuguese citizens and citizens of other countries that have special agreements with Tunisia.
Portugal nationals are eligible for visa-free entry to Tunisia under the following conditions:
- The purpose of their trip to Tunisia is tourism
- Their stay in Tunisia will not be longer than 90 days
If the purpose of the visit is other than tourism, such as to work or study in Tunisia, and the stay exceeds 90 days, Portuguese citizens need to obtain a visa to travel to the country.
At the moment, Portuguese passport holders who require a visa must visit the Tunisian Embassy in Lisbon or the consulate in Porto.
Once the eVisa has been introduced, the application can be completed online and there will be no need to contact the embassy or consulate. This will save a considerable amount of time and effort to the applicants.
The length of stay permitted with the online visa has not yet been finalized. Travelers are advised to stay updated on the details regarding the duration of the Tunisia eVisa and other rules and regulations announced by the Tunisian authorities.
Requirements from Portugal
There will be a number of Tunisia visa requirements that Portuguese citizens applying for an eVisa will need to meet once the online system is activated.
Portuguese nationals will need to complete an online application form and fill out personal details such as name, date of birth, passport information, and address. Moreover, several security questions will need to be answered as part of the application process.
The eVisa fee payment will be completed through a secure online system. It is essential to have a valid credit or debit card in order to make the payment.
Once the application has been received, the receipt confirmation will be sent by email. Subsequently, the approval of the Tunisia tourist visa will be sent by email together with further instructions. It is advised to print a copy of the eVisa so that it can be presented to the border authorities at the port of entry to Tunisia if needed.
Apply for a Tunisia Online Visa for Portuguese Nationals
Once the online visa system is introduced, it will be possible to apply for a Tunisian visa electronically. That means that the application can be completed from anywhere in the world outside of Tunisia: Portuguese citizens do not need to be in Portugal at the time of submitting their application.
Filling out the online application form will not take longer than a few minutes. In order to apply for the Tunisia eVisa, the citizens of Portugal will need to have:
- A valid Portuguese passport
- A credit or debit card for paying the eVisa fee
- A valid email address for all necessary communication relevant to the visa
It is essential to make sure that the passport is valid at least until the date of leaving Tunisia. The passport does not need to be valid past that date. If the passport expires earlier, it is necessary to obtain a new one before applying for a visa for Tunisia from Portugal.
It is estimated that most applications will be processed quickly before the approved eVisas are sent to applicants. Please note that there are no guarantees that a visa will be approved and the final decision will be made by the Tunisian immigration department.
